Lyophilized peptide, laboratory definition

Lyophilized means freeze-dried. A peptide solution is frozen and the water is removed under vacuum, leaving a dry cake in the vial. Laboratories specify that solid because residual water speeds hydrolysis of the peptide bond. The cake is the catalogue form for most research peptides on this site. It is not a finished solution, and this definition does not list solvent volumes or personal-use steps.

What the dry cake is, and what it is not

Water lets the peptide bond hydrolyse and lets a cake collapse. The cake is the object that arrives. Appearance is a receiving observation. Write it down, then open the Certificate of Analysis. If the seal is broken or the solid looks wet, quarantine the vial and write to the desk with the order number. Do not heat the vial to "restore" a cake.

How a Canadian laboratory files the format

The receiving line has six fields that this term cares about: SKU, milligram fill, lot or the statement that no lot is published, date received, storage location, and whether the sample name matched. A peptide chromatogram does not document them, and their documents do not document a peptide cake. Write the format that actually arrived. Then write the SKU. The word lyophilized is only the first of those two fields.
