SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide in the Szeto–Schiller series, also discussed in the literature as elamipretide. Published descriptions emphasize a short, basic, aromatic sequence and association with cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is not a mitochondrial open reading frame peptide. MOTS-c is that different class. Length alone separates them: four residues versus sixteen.
